Your first aid certificate runs for three years — but the CPR unit inside it is treated differently. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends refreshing CPR every 12 months, and most Victorian employers, childcare regulators and industry bodies have adopted that as a hard requirement. It isn't red tape; it's what the resuscitation research consistently shows.
People who did a CPR course a year ago usually still remember what to do — 30 compressions, 2 breaths. What decays is the physical performance: studies measuring rescuers on instrumented manikins find compression depth becomes too shallow, the tempo drifts off the 100–120 per minute range, and hesitation creeps into the first crucial minute. Those are exactly the variables that determine whether blood keeps moving to the brain.
For a cardiac arrest outside hospital, survival drops roughly 10% for every minute without CPR. Ambulance response into a busy corridor like Dandenong is quick by national standards, but "quick" is still many minutes — the bystander is the real first responder. An annual 90-minute tune-up keeps the muscle memory honest enough to fill that gap hard and fast.
The renewal is the same short course as the original — HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation — not a special "refresher module". A brief online component in your own time, then 90 minutes of practical: compressions and rescue breaths on adult, child and infant manikins, choking response, and a training defibrillator. You leave with a new statement of attainment dated for another year.
We run HLTAID009 CPR ($45) every morning and afternoon at Walker Street, Dandenong — certificate issued the same day. If your full first aid certificate is also nearing its 3-year mark, jump straight to HLTAID011 ($95), which includes the CPR unit.
Daily morning and afternoon sessions at our Dandenong venue. Book online and attend as soon as tomorrow.
